Believe it or not, I don't ever remember standing right in front of the White House. I was pretty excited to head down to see all the National Christmas Trees set up in front of the White House. There is one from every State! There was huge one in the middle with trains all around. It was pretty amazing. There are tons of people out this time of year, so it was a challenge to get some images.

Cookies! I saw these puppies at Wegmans and had to get them.. They are super sweet, and need a warning on the label:) But fun and festive to photograph. Off camera flash was high above me pointed down on the subject. I added some christmas lights for play.

I had a few goals for this image. It had to be close up; I wanted to work with the hair flash on camera right; and I wanted to keep most of the light off of the backdrop.

One thing about self portraits is trying to focus correctly.. Up & Down, Up & Down, I have images that are sharp, blurry and a little soft, and here I thought I was in the same place each time:) lol..

Set up: Flash with Photek softlighter to camera Left, Flash for hair to the camera Right.. I moved the hair light from back to side.

For this set up: The flash is high above me and tilted directly down. I went with 1 flash for this image. I did try a few for a hair light to the back camera right, but I felt it was too much.

Learning! That is the word. For this technique, I was going for 1/2 the face lit, 1/2 the face dark. This was harder than what I thought.   Took me awhile to get the flashes in the right spots and the settings to create the look.

Flash Set up is - #1 to camera right in the back of me to light the side of my hair.  #2 flash/umbrella is to camera left. Reflector in front.

I don't know if this is the picture I envisioned for this technique.   I didn't like it at first, so I grabbed the sunglasses.

Happy day 2.. Uh, who said taking your photo was easy!!!

The technique I wanted to try was to have 1 flash/umbrella directly on each side of me, so it would cast a shadow over my nose. (I am really interested in facial shadows)

After playing around with the this set up for a few, I added a reflector directly in front of me. Then still missing something, I stuck a fan for some hair movement in.

I am taking a month to experiment with lighting. Inspired by Dustin Diaz - and his strobist information, I decided that I needed a break to focus on flash set ups and techniques. I purchased a Rogue 3 in 1 honeycomb grid at the Photo Expo back in October and have been wanting to break it out for a test.

Here's my first take. See below for set up.

Here's the set up:

Working with GRID Flash ONLY. Flash & Grid set up to the LEFT, and reflector directly across to the RIGHT. I was hoping to have the flash bounce off of the reflector back to me, I can see a little of the result in the back of my hair. Did I mention it is hard to set up, pose and photograph yourself.

I have been slacking on photography projects lately. Mainly due to so many things going on, and not enough time. I didn't even post a Happy Thanksgiving! :) (I hope everyone had a fabulous Turkey day, btw!!!)

This month nothing was set for what to photograph, so I opened the pantry and decided that I was going to pick something out and just go for it. My eye landed on the Herr's bag of potato chips and some potato sticks, and thought here we go!

Set up. Used Off Camera Flash and some Kenko tubes, 2 different color plates, white background. Chips are very very greasy, but taste oh soooo good!

This is St. Mary's Chapel located on the corner of Ship Rd & Rt 30, Exton. I actually had something else in mind for Letter C, but when I was in route I was distracted by this lovely Chapel. I love to read! I love it so much I joined a book club this year. Nicholas Sparks and Kristin Hannah are 2 of my favorite authors.. Some of the books have been hard for me to get through; I am a "Go to the back of the book to read" kind of person. People laugh at this, but I have reading anxiety. I don't typically blog about books, but I just finished "The Art of Racing in the Rain" and I loved it sooo much, I had to share it! If you are a pet owner, particularly a dog owner, you will love this book.. I just couldn't put it down..

Last weekend I attended my very first Roller Derby Bout for the Brandywine Roller Girls. I had read up on the rules, but really had no idea how things worked until watching an actual Jam take place. But by the end of the Bout, I was catching on and showing team support when the Jammers made it through the line up and added up the scores for their teams. It was a close call, but the Brass Knuckle Betties took the win.

In this image, the Jammers are the ones in the White & Black caps with the stars, they have to burst through the pack and circle around and burst through again.. There is bumping, shoving, and alot of knee smacking to the ground during these Jams.. At times it can be intense, but really a great sport to enjoy!

This image consists of 3 (painting with light) images. I used Photomatix, which I haven't touched in such a long time, and realized that it has changed completely!

All images are lighted differently with a flashlight and joined in the software.

For this setup:

Pat and I worked the items into a setup. Flash lights were used as our lighting source. Settings were 8 seconds, F22. This is a single image, but I am wondering if a few of the images were joined, what kind of appearance would it take on? Something I will be working on.

I was so inspired by the closeness of the extension tube that I will be adding one to my wish list.

Over all, I can actually say for the FIRST time that I am pleased with the results.. We shot both 50mm and 18-200mm with the tube to see the difference. All in all, cupcakes are sooo much fun to photograph.. I loved a a good many of the images and they were YUMMY!

Help!!! I need a food stylist!!! :) Food is so hard to style... to make it look half decent is a huge task.

Can anyone offer tips on how to cut reflections from silverware?

Overall, I feel I need more time and better looking food to experiment with.... I tried apples, broccoli, and olives and then settled on the noodles. I really think spaghetti noodles would have been more eye pleasing, but I was out..... White background was a small challenge.

I appreciate any comments!!!

Welcome to the start of The Food Inspirations Project. Pat and I are starting a food project that is designed to showcase a variety of food subjects with different lighting techniques. We will be posting 1x a month. Please feel free to comment or photograph the same subjects and share your findings!

Project Details:

Subject - Pizza

Lighting source - Flashpoint 30 LED light 5500k.

Outcome:

Pizza is hard to photograph!! Wowsa! The lightening source wasn't my favorite to use on this particular subject. I found that there is limited time frame to photograph "hot" foods and I wasn't overly happy with the "look" of the pizza.
